What Do I Need To Know To Get the Right Dentures?
High-tech diagnosis means that your dentures will fit comfortably
In the past, dentures have been given to patients based on old-fashioned x-rays. By taking a three dimensional CT (CAT) scan of your head and neck, Dr. Marinic can see your underlying bone and tooth structure in complete, high-resolution detail, and from every angle.
Jawbone abnormalities, weak jaw bone mass, excessive porosity (more common with older patients), gum tissue issues, unobserved hard and soft tissue loss, tissue sensitivity and complex bite and occlusion problems are common, yet insufficiently diagnosed problems that can be responsible for creating a miserable experience with denture treatment.
By using the Galileos Cone Beam CT scanner, right here in our office, Dr. Marinic can find out about these and other potential issues that you might have before you are fitted for dentures. With potential difficulties observed and dealt with ahead of time, you will get dentures that fit well and allow you to have the quality of life that you deserve.
Dr. Marinic Will Eliminate the Guesswork from Your Denture Experience
Dr. Marinic believes that your dental treatment will be much more successful if you are able to make fully informed decisions about your own care. That is why, in our office, patients undergoing treatment for literally any type of tooth replacement procedure are trained by the doctor to read their own CT Scan.
By looking at your CT Scan, you can see, very clearly, exactly how your jaw and current dentition will respond or change to practically every treatment possibility being considered.
Denture patients see, perhaps for the first time, the condition of all critical bone areas, bone porosity (yes, it can be seen with the naked eye), uneven jawbone, bone loss pockets due to old extractions and current, overall health of oral tissues.
The learning curve is brief and thorough. You will be able to select the right type of denture treatment, with or without specialized implants, without the common fear of requesting treatment that is not needed or necessary.
Custome, Quality Dentures That Are the Right Shape, Color, & Size for You
Dr. Marinic will make alterations to soft or hard tissues, based on what the you want in terms of what you decide that the perfect denture would be for you. Casual fit, tight fit, average or above average appearance, face lift dentures (face lifts are created through opening the bite), regaining the ability to eat certain types of foods and the ability to define how often the denture needs to be removed — Dr. Marinic will discuss all of these issues with you, and thoroughly plan your dentures to fit your needs.
Our full and partial dentures are custom-made using quality materials that look natural and are durable. We ensure that they are the right shape, color and size for a natural look and that the bite (the way your teeth com together) is correct.
All of our dentures are custom crafted to Dr. Marinic’s exacting standards, and we have our own in-house dental lab, so that we can easily help you with relines or repairs.
We can also solve denture problems you may be experiencing with an existing set of dentures. Patients frequently come to us to correct earlier work when they are having difficulty.
What Kind of Dentures Do I Need?
After you do a treatment plan with Dr. Marinic, you’ll know exactly what your options are in getting dentures to replace your missing teeth.
Full, or complete, dentures can be made to replace all the teeth.
Partial dentures may be made to replace a few or several teeth.
Overdentures can be full or partial dentures, and are secured to the roots of your own teeth.
Implant-supported dentures can be full or partial, and are supported by titanium posts implanted in your jaw bone.
Can I Get Dental Implants to Stabilize My Dentures and Prevent Bone Loss?
Where appropriate and needed Dr. Marinic uses dental implants to stabilize your dentures. This has the added benefit of deterring bone loss. Loss of bone in your mouth can cause eventual difficulties with wearing dentures, jaw problems and even change the appearance of your face, giving a sunken look.
A new procedure called “All on Four” dentures allows you to have dentures that are supported by four, carefully place implants per arch. If you have the bone and tissue structure to qualify for this procedure, you can get implant-supported dentures in a single office visit.
Advantages of All-On-Four Dentures
How we can give you the highest quality dentures in the shortest amount of time - without bone grafts!
With All on 4 dentures, four titanium posts secure the entire arch of teeth.
The All on 4 Procedure was developed to help patients without teeth rapidly regain a fully-functional mouth and jaw. It is a procedure that uses the fewest implants possible, avoids bone graft surgery, and provides high-quality restorative results in the shortest time possible.
The All-on-4 Dental Implant Procedure uses four implants, with the back implants placed at an angle to take maximum advantage of existing bone. Dr. Marinic plans your surgery ahead of time, using virtual technology from Nobel Biocare, which ensures that this can be done quickly and easily, so that you can leave the same day with fixed, non-removable replacement teeth.
Traditional approaches to restoring a full arch of teeth usually involved bone grafts, six or more implants, and as many as 18 months of treatment. That meant that a patient often would be without any teeth, or with ill-fitting temporary dentures for more than a year.
With the All-on-4 Dental Implant Procedure, you have one or two consultation visits to the office, to allow Dr. Marinic to gather information for a treatment plan (CAT Scan, X-rays, impressions, photos). Following your consultation, you are scheduled for placement of the implants and the new teeth are fitted and adjusted.
After almost six months, when the gums have fully healed and the implants are fused to the natural bone, Dr. Marinic will take new impressions of your mouth and prepare a final, stronger, permanent set of teeth adjusted to a perfect fit—this is all included in the initial fee. This helps ensure that your new teeth will last for decades, and provide maximum support, beauty, and function.
Dental Implants / Implant-supported denture
Our patient, a 70 year old male, had worn a lower denture partial for years. Because of the wear and tear on soft and hard tissues in the lower jaw (not unusual for long term denture wearers), the patient sustained considerable bone resorption. His remaining lower teeth were severely deteriorated.
Pain became unbearable as the denture created increasing pressure on the mandibular nerve. The patient eventually was forced to stop using a lower denture. Soon after, because of eating difficulty, the patient began to lose considerable weight.
When the patient first presented in our office, Dr. Marinic was able to determine that the patient could be a candidate for a specialized implant system that would take the best advantage of his unique jawbone structure. Some areas of the mandible were healthy and had sufficient bone material that could support a custom implant solution.
Dr. Marinic surgically located the delicate mandibular nerve and was able to develop specific treatment methods that eliminated additional risk for damaging this critical nerve tissue.
Dr. Marinic extracted the remaining teeth in the patient’s lower jaw. Implants were placed in healthy areas of the jaw. Since a specialized extraction procedure was used that did not further compromise the patient’s bone structures, a total of four implants were placed, enabling the fitting of an implant secured denture
After a three month healing period, the patient returned to have a specialized impression taken so that Dr. Marinic could specially craft an implant-supported denture that would meet all of his needs. The specifications were taken digitally and sent to our in-office lab to manufacture a titanium framework for the prosthesis lab that would match the implant and jaw structure comfortably.
When the prosthetic base was completed, Dr. Marinic fit teeth to the structure, and had the patient try it out for phonetics, esthetics, and function. When he was sure that the teeth would fit and function perfectly, Dr. Marinic processed the teeth in our in-house laboratory to perfectly color-match the patient’s smile. The new teeth were then permanently attached to the implant abutments.
When his new teeth were placed, the patient looked at his new smile, which now provided normal support for the cheeks and lip structures. He said “Maybe now I can get a kiss!”
The patient was thrilled with his new teeth, his appearance and his renewed ability to eat just about anything he wanted.
