Continuing Education – Is It Really Necessary?

What is CE?Students learning in dental school

CE consists of classes, courses, and organized learning programs.  Dentists participate in CE after they graduate from dental school so that they can stay up-to-date in their field and learn about the latest techniques and procedures, such as laser dentistry, cosmetic procedures, or sleep dentistry.  Some CE classes are free to the dentist, and others cost thousands of dollars.

Who is required to take CE?

Doctors, dentists, and psychologists are among the many professionals required to take predetermined amounts of CE to maintain licensure and certification so that they may continue to practice within a particular state or region. 

What are professional designations?

Professional designations are given by professional bodies and organizations as a means to apply professional standards, increase the level of practice, and better serve the public.  Attaining a professional designation usually requires the completion of specific training (via CE) and/or passing an exam.

What are Fellows of the AGD?Adult learning

A general dentist who has earned Fellowship in the AGD (FAGD) has completed a minimum of 500 FAGD-approved CE hours, passed a comprehensive exam, and has been an AGD member for three continuous years.  Dr. Marinic has earned this designation.

What are Masters of the AGD?

A general dentist who has earned Mastership in the AGD (MAGD) has completed a structured and demanding set of requirements.  After receiving their FAGD, these dentists must complete a challenging course of hands-on study in 16 dental disciplines, totaling 600 hours of CE, to earn their MAGD.  Dr. Marinic has completed 90% of his requirements to earn is Mastership in the AGD.

What is the Academy of General Dentistry?

academy_of_general_dentistry_60143The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is a professional association of more than 37,000 general dentists from the United States and Canada.  Founded in 1952, the AGD has grown to become the second largest dental association in the United States.  It’s the only association that exclusively represents the needs and interests of general dentists.  The AGD Headquarters office is located in Chicago, Ill.

What is a general dentist?

General dentists are the primary dental care providers for patients of all Dr. Marinic talking to patientages. They can provide overall oral health care for you and your family.  Your general dentist, Dr. Marinic, manages the diagnosis, treatment, and overall coordination of services to meet your oral health needs.  If you need a dental procedure performed by a specialist (endodontist, periodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, etc…) Dr. Marinic, as your general dentist, will work with other dentists to make sure you get the care you need.

What are the requirements to become an AGD member?AGD Impact

Members never stop learning since the AGD requires its members to participate in at least 75 hours of continuing education every three years. Despite the requirement, however, surveys show that AGD members average more than 40 hours each year.  Dr. Marinic averages more than 50 hours each year.

What is Fellowship in the AGD?

To earn a Fellowship Award in the AGD (FAGD), Dr. Marinic had to complete a minimum of 500 continuing dental education credit hours, pass a comprehensive exam, and have been an AGD member for three continuous years.  After membership_l1receiving his Fellowship, Dr. Marinic was able to publicize his award by adding the FAGD designation to his name.

What is Mastership in the AGD?

Dr. Marinic is now on his way to attaining a Mastership Award in the AGD (MAGD).  He must earn an additional 600 approved continuing dental education credits, meeting minimum requirements in certain dental disciplines, of which 400 hours are hands-on courses.  He is 90% of the way there.  After receiving Mastership, Dr. Marinic may publicize his award by adding the MAGD designation to his or her name.
